Communities that Care®
Youth Coalitions

Through community coalitions and mobilization, communities come together to promote the positive development of children and youth and prevent problems behaviors, including substance abuse, delinquency, teen pregnancy, school drop-out and violence.

Program Overview
  • Bring key leaders together to motivate community commitment to young people.
  • Partner with community groups, schools, law enforcement, agencies, and others to expand youth development as well as substance abuse and violence prevention efforts.

  • Support the prevention efforts of community partners.

  • Provide technical support to coalition efforts.


Goals
  • Increase community awareness, advocacy and action to promote the health and safety of our youth and the prevention of youth violence and alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use.


Current Program Components
  • A Board of Directors that helps focus the community's attention and efforts on children and youth.
  • Staff and support Communities That Care® coalitions and activities.

  • Staff and support the Faith-Based Youth Development Coalition.

  • Staff and support for Students Protesting Lies About Tobacco! (SPLAT!)

  • Support of other local community coalition efforts.

  • The Campaign for a Game Smart Thurston Community, educating parents/caregivers about video game violence.

  • Staff and support for the County-wide Meth Coalition and its education & outreach efforts

  • Staff and support for the Communities Against Tobacco Coalition, focusing on high-risk and underserved populations

  • On-going collaboration with community partners (agencies, schools, law enforcement, local government, service organizations, etc.)
