Project ALERT
|
Stopping drug use before it starts is the most effective way to protect our children the dangers of
drugs
Program Overview
- Project ALERT is a nationally recognized, evidence-based curriculum for middle school students
- Project ALERT gives students insights, understanding, and skills to resist using substances,
especially alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and inhalants – those substances most used by teens
- Partnering with school districts and the WA National Guard Drug Demand Reduction Unit expands
this prevention effort
Goals
- Motivate students against drug use
- Provide skills and strategies to resist drugs
- Establish new non-use attitudes and beliefs
Current Components
- TOGETHER! provides funding assistance and technical support to school districts implementing
Project ALERT
- Through the use of small group activities, role-playing exercises, real-life video, and guided
classroom discussions, Project ALERT serves to shift the pro-drug use mindset and create healthier
attitudes and beliefs
- Health teachers, local law enforcement officers, WA National Guard Drug Demand Reduction Unit
soldiers, and contracted teachers provide the instruction
- The curriculum is currently being used at selected schools in North
Thurston Public Schools and the Olympia School District
- An evaluation is completed by all students
