After School Programs Economically disadvantaged children and families are provided with youth development opportunities that offer tutoring, recreational programs, skill building activities and access to community resources.

Program Overview

  • Brings resources to children and families where they live or go to school.
  • Provides supervised, safe after school and summer program for children residing in the Evergreen Villages affordable housing complex on Olympia's westside.
  • Provides after school programs at three elementary schools, serving children identified as needing additional academic and social assistance. (Horizons Elementary, Lacey; McLane Elementary, Olympia; and Lacey Elementary, Lacey)

Goals
  • Provide opportunities for children and youth in targeted areas during out of school time, promoting skill building, academic achievement, healthy behaviors, and bonding with positive role models.
  • Provide resources, referrals and support to parents and families.

Current Components
  • Educational enhancement and encouragement through programs such as homework help and tutoring, reading, science, and other academically focused programs.
  • Opportunities for skill-building and personal growth through social, recreational, educational, and cultural programs such as Girl Scouts, Too Good For Drugs, life skills classes, social skill-building, arts and crafts, sports, and others.
  • A safe environment with caring adults and positive role models that enhance youth growth and development.
  • Partnerships with local community organizations including The Evergreen State College, South Sound Reading Foundation, Community Youth Services, Timberland Regional Library, Thurston County Extension Office, GRuB, and South Sound YMCA to enhance educational and social skill development.
  • Opportunities for parental and family involvement in the programs.
  • Resource and referral information and support services for parents, including a Thurston County Food Bank Satellite Outreach Site at Evergreen Villages.
  • Collaboration with and involvement of schools, law enforcement, service clubs, and individuals.
  • Volunteer outreach and involvement.
