The Awards of Excellence is an annual event co-sponsored by TOGETHER! and The Olympian at the end of each school year. It recognizes high school students for their achievements in several categories.

World No Tobacco Day

May 31 is the annual, globally recognized World No Tobacco Day, encouraging 24 hours of abstinence from tobacco. TOGETHER! celebrated it in 2010 with an event at South Sound High School in Lacey.

Dennis Embry workshop

In December 2009, TOGETHER! brought prevention expert Dennis Embry, Ph.D., to Olympia to give a workshop titled "Strategies for Preventing Addiction: Saving Our Future."

20th Anniversary

In October 2009, TOGETHER! celebrated its 20th anniversary by "Painting a Picture of TOGETHER!" for the community with a big event. We told the story of who we are and what we do.

SPLAT!/SSYC barbecue

TOGETHER!'s youth coalitions, Students Protesting Lies About Tobacco! and the South Sound Youth Collaborative, will have a barbecue celebration July 15 in Lacey. If you are a member of one of these groups, contact Jesse at 360-493-2230, ext. 17, for more information.

Little Red Schoolhouse

The Little Red Schoolhouse (a project of TOGETHER!) helps low-income families who can't afford clothing, backpacks and school supplies for their school-age children. Every year, they give these supplies to the families. You can help by donating items for the families or volunteering at the distribution event. If you are in need, please come to the distribution day and make "back to school" a much better time of year. Here are details on the distribution day and a couple of opportunities to donate or help:

Fundraising dinner, Aug. 6

Come to the Olympia-Lacey Church of God between 4 and 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 6, and have dinner to support Little Red Schoolhouse. For $10, you get a pulled pork sandwich, potato salad, baked beans and a beverage. Food is being provided by Marv's Marvlus Pit Bar-B-Q.

Mixx96 fundraiser, Aug. 13

On Aug. 13, Mixx 96.1 FM will be helping with a fundraiser and supply-raiser for Little Red Schoolhouse. On-air personalities will be at the corner of State and Washington in downtown Olympia from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., asking for donations to the project. You can walk or drive over and donate clothing, supplies, checks or cash. Please help those families who, without this program, face an awful choice every August of deciding between bills, clothes and supplies for their kids.

Distribution Day, Aug. 19

If you are a family in need, come to the Little Red Schoolhouse Distribution Day between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. at Jefferson Middle School in Olympia. If you would like to volunteer at the event, contact them at 438-1100 x1143 or LRS@redschool.org.

Donations also can be accepted at any Thurston County branch of Heritage Bank beginning Aug. 2.

Stuff the Bus

Stuff the Bus is a community event put on by classified employees from local school districts. This year's event will be Saturday, Aug. 28, in the Tumwater Costco parking lot. There will be a preview in the Tumwater 4th of July parade. They will accept food for the Thurston County Food Bank, toiletries for the YWCA's Other Bank program, books for South Sound Reading Foundation, and backpacks and school supplies for their Tumwater School District Backpack Program. Stop by to say hi and drop off a donation. It all goes a long way.
